Remember when we all got viral with the JJ Abrams-Produced monster mash flick, Cloverfield? It seems that the faux-documentary slash alien-invasion-film is the new dramedy, with buzz levels rising for the upcoming Peter Jackson produced, Neill Blomkamp directed feature, District 9.
District 9 (an expansion on the kick arse short film Alive in Joburg which Blomkamp made in 2005,) tells the story of a race of aliens who land in South Africa and (surprise surprise) aren't and fondly received by the locals. In fact, the E.T.s are forced into a containment area complete with manual labor duties. Bummer.
As is the norm with Hollywood marketing these days, several viral websites have launched to "ground the film in reality", such as a fake blog by a "non-human activist" and the official site is supposedly run by Multi-National United, an in-film company. You can have a squiz at the trailer there, but there's an uncensored version floating around the internets that gives a non-pixelated look at the alien species.
AWESOME FACT: At one stage, Jackson and Blomkamp were set to bring an adaptation of the hit video game series, Halo to the big screen. But it's "been put on the back burner" which is movie-speak for "not happening right now because someone wants more money than they deserve."
